Digital Transformation of EPA's Greenhouse Gas Emissions Report

Project Brief

The Challenge

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency develops an annual report called the Inventory of U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks. This report tracks total annual U.S. emissions and removals by source, economic sector, and greenhouse gas going back to 1990. For many years, key findings and data tables were published in PDF documents and not easily accessible.

ERG's Solution

In 2014, ERG began a digital transformation of the report and data and launched an interactive data publication tool for the U.S. GHG emissions inventory. ERG supported EPA’s Climate Change Division in designing, developing, and deploying a new Web-based system to provide transparent, accurate, complete, consistent, and comparable access to data. ERG built this website with open source data visualization and data table libraries. The site gives end users a new, higher level of data-interactive visualization, filtering, data access, and ability to download the data in various data formats.
