This course is based on EPA's Guidelines for Ecological Assessment. Throughout the course, you will see references identifying which section of the Guidelines discusses the topic being presented such as the one below these paragraphs. The PDF these links lead to is 1,335 KB. The Guidelines are not a regulation: they are intended as internal EPA guidance setting forth best practices for ecological risk assessment and describing strengths and weaknesses of alternative approaches. The Guidelines do not provide specific details about how to collect data, or which methods or models to use in a study, because other EPA documents address these questions. Although the Guidelines were written to promote consistency, the authors wanted to allow for flexibility, so all EPA offices and regions can use them either directly or as a basis for developing specific guidance suited to their needs. Ecological risk assessment is a rapidly evolving discipline. In the future, EPA intends to develop a series of shorter, more detailed documents on specific ecological risk assessment topics.
