Scope and Complexity of the Risk Assessment

The final product of the planning phase is agreement on the scope and complexity of the risk assessment. Planners review such issues as:photo of fish crossing paths

  • What is the nature of the decision?
    • What is the range of options?
    • Is this assessment:
      • Mandated?
      • To cover a small area?
      • To cover a large area?
      • In-depth?
      • Less detailed?
    • What is the time span to be covered?
  • What characteristics might the risk assessment team have?
  • What is the best output for the required decisions?
  • What information is already available?
  • What resources are available? (Are there ways to add any, e.g., partnering, new data collection, alternative analytical tools?)
  • What constraints are there?
  • Who will use the results?

Detailed analysis isn't always appropriate or necessary.

  • Should we start with a screening assessment?
  • Is tiering an option? (This will be discussed on the next screen.)

Every risk assessment is constrained by multiple factors, such as:

  • Data validity.
  • Scientific understanding.
  • Expertise.
  • Time.
  • Financial resources.
