Lesson 3: A Tiered Approach to Risk Assessment

text-only alternative

Tiered Risk Assessment

A tiered assessment is a risk assessment that:

  • Is set up in a number of sequential steps of increased complexity and effort.
  • Specifies decision criteria for each step.
  • Involves evaluating whether or not the next step of assessment should be undertaken based on these criteria.

Tiered assessments involve carefully planned iteration. But the iteration isn't always planned at the start of the assessment. It can be triggered by new information or a need to re-evaluate something — which could happen at any point in the risk assessment.

On the other hand, unnecessary iteration should be avoided. Click the In-Depth icon for tips.
