The elements of each relevant level of organization must be considered in their relation to the other elements of their environment, and in light of the three main criteria:

  • Ecological relevance.
  • Susceptibility to known or potential stressors.
  • Relevance to management goals.

Some levels of organization are:

  • Individuals.
  • Populations.
  • Communities.
  • Ecosystems.
  • Landscapes.
  • Multiple ecosystem processes.

Activities on each of these levels have an impact on the others.
