Why and How to Develop Conceptual Models

Conceptual models significantly help formulation of the ecological risk assessment in a variety of ways. They:

  • Describe the system that is the subject of the risk assessment.
  • Provide a meaningful framework for organizing the available information.
  • Clearly delineate what is known and not known about the stressor-ecosystem relationship.
  • Provide a framework for using data when, during analysis, you evaluate the functional relationships predicted in the model.
