Describing the Source

There are two ways to define a source. It can be:

  • The place where a stressor originates (for example, a factory smokestack emitting a stressor such as sulfur dioxide).

factory smokestack
  • A management practice or action that produces stressors (for example, construction activities resulting in the release of fine sediments into a stream).

If the original source has been removed, the source is considered the current location of the stressors. For example, if an industrial plant that produced contaminants has been demolished, the contaminated sediments of the area might be considered a source.
