Qualitative Stressor-Response Analyses

.The relationship between stressor and response can be described qualitatively:

  • A response can be described as high, medium, or low.
  • A response can be described as "yes" or "no."
high   medium   low

yes

no

For example: one researcher assumed that seeds would not germinate if they were inundated with water at the critical time. This stressor-response relationship was described simply as a yes or no. Qualitative analysis is useful when data are scant and an answer is needed in a hurry.

However, quantitative analyses are strongly preferred over qualitative analyses. We'll discuss these on the next screen. If quantitative analysis is not needed, move on to Assessing Multiple Stressors.

We'll talk more about how these determinations are used in the next module, Risk Characterization.
