Lesson 2: Estimating Ecological Risk

In this lesson, we'll take a closer look at how assessors estimate risk.

key pointThe goal of risk estimation is to integrate information from the exposure and stressor-response profiles to determine how much risk the stressor poses to an ecological entity. Any associated uncertainties should also be evaluated.

The basic risk questions are:

  • Is it acute or chronic?
  • What is the severity of effects?
  • What is the time over which they occur?
  • Is the risk to one species or many species?
  • How many organisms are at risk?

Some approaches used to answer these questions and develop the risk estimate are:

Let's look at each of these approaches, beginning with field surveys.
