Categorical Rankings

Categorical rankings (e.g., yes/no, high/medium/low) are another approach used by assessors to estimate risk.

Categorical rankings can be used for the following purposes:

  • To provide qualitative risk estimates. In some cases, professional judgment or other qualitative evaluation techniques may be used to place risks in categories such as low/medium/high or yes/no.
  • To translate qualitative judgments into a mathematical comparison. These methods are often used in comparative risk exercises.
