Risk Management Decision Making

Ecological Risk Assessement diagram with emphasis on Communicate Results and Risk Management

It's the flow chart of the overall risk assessment process (this phase, communicating results, and the risk management phase that follows it are highlighted). After discussing the results, risk managers may decide that follow-on activities are required before they can make risk management decisions or communicate results publicly. Even at this point, risk assessment remains an iterative process.

Depending on the importance of the assessment, confidence in its results, and available resources, it may be a good idea to conduct another iteration (perhaps starting with Risk Characterization or Analysis) to support a final management decision. This may be as simple as collecting additional toxicological data or adding another model or analytical method – or it could mean going back to Problem Formulation. It should seldom be necessary to revisit problem formulation.
