resource Ordering the Components of Risk Assessment (Text Version)

Take a good look at the ordered list of ecological risk assessment phases. Can you recall what's involved in each of the major parts of risk assessment?

  1. Problem Formulation.
  2. Analysis.
  3. Risk Characterization.

You will be assigning one of the phases to a variety of steps in the process.

Read each task in the list below. When you read the task, see if you can decide which phase it belongs in before reading the letter in the column to the left.

Phases of Ecological Risk Assessment

Activities Phase
Analyze stressor response. B
Evaluate all lines of evidence that support or refute the risk estimate. C
Define the entity(ies) and attributes of concern. A
Establish causality. B
Describe stressor source. B
Articulate the results of field surveys. C
Summarize results of the risk assessment in a risk assessment report C
Prepare exposure profile. B
Develop risk questions. A
Present risk as an exposure or effects model output. C
Link measures of effects to assessment endpoints. B
Anticipate in what format analysis results will be presented. A
Describe extent of exposure. B
Choose analytical methods for estimating risk. A
Evaluate data. B
Summarize risk information in a categorical ranking (i.e., give a qualitative evaluation). C
Evaluate study conditions. B
Prepare stressor response profile. B
Map stressor pathways. A
Compare Exposure and Effects Data, presenting it as a quotient. C
Determine the significance of adverse effects on the assessment endpoints. C
Use information on ecological relevance, susceptibility to known or potential stressors, and relevance to management goals to choose an appropriate assessment endpoint. A
Describe stressor distribution. B
Collect information. A
Explore possible effects on an ecological entity (the assessment endpoint). A

Reminder! If you are having trouble with this exercise, you may want to print out some flow charts from lessons or Wrap-Ups to help you. Practice until you are able to put the steps in order, associated with the correct component.
