Listed below are the topics around which discussion is likely to
begin or significantly change during the finalization of Risk Assessment.
Does this list make sense to you? Is any missing?
| Laws and regulations |
As risk managers discuss options with the risk assessor, applicable
laws and regulations must be taken into account. |
| Politics |
Although politics are not part of the risk assessor's investigations,
politics can impact how the optional responses to the risk are
prioritized. |
| Assessment endpoints |
While this certainly needs to be done, this should have been
completed during the course of problem formulation and refined
as the assessment moved on. The assessment endpoints are certainly
relevant but are not likely to be a question by this time. |
| Societal/community concerns |
The community's concerns dictate how it directs its energy.
Also, to work as a partner with the public is essential to successfully
communicating about the risk assessment and management decisions. |
| Exposure pathways |
While this is an important interaction that may be discussed
at the end of the assessment, exposure pathways should have
been discussed and established, at least in a preliminary way,
when the assessor created the conceptual model during problem
formulation. It should not be a new discussion at this point
in the risk assessment. |
| Costs associated with protecting (or failing to protect) the
resource |
Although economic considerations are usually part of risk
management, economists, not risk assessors, typically provide
economic analyses. |
| Analysis plan |
This is worked out at the end of problem formulation. |
| The assessor's confidence in the risk assessment |
While the risk assessor should be in touch periodically with
the risk manager to discuss information gaps and other challenges
or questions during assessment, uncertainty and other concerns
should still be clearly conveyed during the communication phase. |
