ATSDR's The Public Health Assessment
Process and the Community
An online learning program on evaluating health issues
associated with hazardous waste.
Since ATSDR is a federal agency that works with state and local
officials to assess possible adverse health effects associated with
exposure to hazardous waste sites, community involvement is essential
to ATSDR's success in gathering the information needed to conduct
a thorough assessment.
To encourage local involvement, ERG created a community-oriented
Web site that answers the question "Who is ATSDR and what are
they doing in my community?"
Along with general information about ATSDR, the site includes a
highly interactive online learning program about the assessment
process. Throughout the program's six modules, visitors access information
at their own pace. The site's architecture allows the visitor to
move quickly through top-level instruction, visit subsidiary screens
for more detail on a topic, or jump to another module from any screen.
The site invites visitors to test their knowledge before beginning
the program, and it poses learning exercises throughout. Visitors
who submit a post-test-and-feedback form from the site are immediately
awarded a certificate of completion.
ERG developed the program's instructional approach and interactive
content by recasting and expanding an existing slide presentation
for public health professionals. The online program's deeper-level
content is of interest to this audience, and many assessment resources
are readily available.
Tech Notes:
- Extensive client-side interaction developed in JavaScript.
- Highly organized site architecture for flexible navigation.
- Logical file structure for ease of maintenance and site expansion.
