EPA Ecological Risk Assessment
EPA's Risk Assessment Forum develops policy and guidelines for conducting
scientifically sound assessments of impacts on environmental systems.
This mission involves establishing agency-wide consensus on some
controversial issues. For this reason, EPA has been conducting classroom
training on its risk assessment guidelines since they were published
in 1998. A small pool of senior staff conduct the 3-day sessions
at locations around the country. ERG helped the agency free up valuable
resources by converting the classroom course to a Web-based training
program, which can be self-paced. The program incorporates a range
of interactive features and activities to engage learners in ways
that simulate the classroom dynamic. Also, ERG exploited opportunities
presented by Web technology to further enrich the learning experience.
Key features include Flash movie introductions and audio presentations.
The result is an engaging and effective tutorial on the agency's
guidelines. Throughout, learning objectives are reinforced and key
concepts are depicted in context, using a recurring flowchart graphic.
