UNC Employee Online Orientation Program
ERG worked closely with the Office of Human Resources (OHR) at
the University of North Carolina (UNC) to create an online orientation
and benefits enrollment program replacing their program of several
weekly one to four-hour, instructor-led new employee orientation
sessions. The application displays only the content keyed to each
user ID and password to protect confidential information such as
categorical variations in policies and benefits packages. The OHR
is committed to making sure new employees understand their options
and responsibilities, and to helping them complete all the necessary
paperwork within the first thirty days of employment. ERG included
printable forms, created animated form-filling demonstrations, and
a system to store print material requests at the click of a button.
To ensure employees don’t miss crucial information, interactions
require stepping through each piece of information before being
able to skip around at will. Further, ERG translated all orientation
content into Spanish and provided a mirror version of the application
in Spanish.
Special aspects of this project were a tight, 3-month timeline,
and OHR’s need to maintain the site independently at the end
of three months. ERG carefully created the file structure, PHP programming,
CSS styles, Flash movies, and other elements to be clearly layered
and labeled so a Web novice could make future edits to the program
after training, which ERG provided.
