Environmental Health

Reducing environmental risks and
protecting public health.

ERG's highly trained staff of public health specialists, risk assessors, toxicologists, epidemiologists, chemists, health educators, and environmental scientists serve our clients' diverse needs for specialized environmental health support. We develop responsive solutions on a wide range of environmental health issues, providing comprehensive evaluations and clear presentations of results.

Risk Assessment

  • Exposure Assessment
ERG's experienced staff determine the likelihood and magnitude of exposure to toxic substances. We apply suitable models for understanding multimedia exposure conditions, assessing contaminant migration, and evaluating potential exposures. ERG has assessed exposures in many residential, commercial, and industrial settings for numerous substances, using both traditional scientific analyses and innovative approaches.

  • Toxicologic and Epidemiologic Evaluations
We analyze the most current toxicologic, epidemiologic, and medical literature to support health decisions and recommend actions to protect individuals and populations. Our staff also provide technical support to clients in developing chemical specific standards and health-based guidance documents used in cancer and non-cancer assessments.

  • Risk Characterization
ERG staff use both prescribed and alternative approaches to evaluate the probability of adverse health effects resulting from exposure to toxic substances. We employ comparative risk analyses to help clients set priorities for decisionmaking. To provide perspective, we identify uncertainties associated with each evaluation and assess their impacts on health decisions.

  • Children's Health
We are committed to addressing the unique concerns associated with children's environmental exposures. We determine and evaluate risks to children living, playing, or attending school near sources of toxic substances; recommend preventative strategies; and support governments' efforts in protecting children.

Risk Communication

  • We are renowned for our ability to present environmental health information to a variety of audiences. Our multidisciplinary teams combine sound science with expert communications skills to deliver customized outreach services. We routinely organize community meetings, prepare presentations, and develop print and Web-based materials on environmental health issues.

Data Management

  • Environmental Databases
ERG creates user-friendly data management tools to help our clients compile, evaluate, and present extensive environmental and health information.

  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
ERG staff use GIS and other mapping tools to illustrate spatial relationships of complex environmental systems when evaluating potential health impacts. We also develop maps and other visual aids for technical documents and outreach materials.

Cost-Benefit Analysis

  • ERG builds both simple and sophisticated models to estimate the costs and benefits of regulatory actions and risk management decisions. We are skilled in using state-of-the art methods for valuing human health and ecosystem impacts, such as surveys and statistical, econometric, microeconomic, and financial analyses.

Training

  • ERG staff translate scientific concepts into effective training programs. We take care of registration and promotion, provide classroom instruction, develop all supporting materials, and conduct testing and evaluation. We also develop engaging, costeffective e-learning programs.

Peer Review

  • Drawing from a database of nationally and internationally recognized experts, ERG's staff coordinate and facilitate peer reviews on emerging scientific issues, such as chemical mixtures, exposure parameters, and risk assessment approaches.
