ERG's Continued Commitment to Climate Resilience and Conservation in California

Cover of report

ERG is working alongside The Nature Conservancy and California state agencies to find ways to accelerate the conservation, restoration, and management of natural and working lands. This effort aims to enhance the climate benefits of these lands, ensuring they play a key role in climate change mitigation and adaptation. ERG developed a streamlined organizational and funding model to make sure California counties have the resources they need to reach their climate goals after partnering with an advisory group of state and local agency representatives, Tribal entities, and private partners.

The proposed model reduces administrative hurdles, provides more stable funding, and encourages coordination of efforts between counties and the State. This approach also allows for the more effective tracking of progress toward California's climate goals. ERG recently piloted this approach in Mariposa County, working with interested parties to test out the effectiveness of the model on the ground.

Work like this is critical for California to achieve carbon neutrality and climate resilience. Healthy, conserved, and restored lands not only capture large amounts of carbon but also protect communities from the impacts of extreme weather events like wildfires, floods, heat, and droughts. Over the past three years, ERG has supported projects in California that assess natural infrastructure solutions to reduce these risks from extreme weather and improve community resilience. By advancing these efforts, ERG is significantly contributing to California's broader climate goals.

ERG is unwavering in its commitment to this mission, and it continues to advance similar efforts both in California, other states and at the national level. Lindy Lowe, Director of Climate and Hazard Resilience at ERG, said, “Supporting projects that result in healthy natural and working lands is a priority for ERG for not only the powerful role they play in climate mitigation and adaptation, but also for the benefits provided to all communities. These benefits include cleaner air and water, risk reduction from extreme events, economic strength and job growth, ecosystem health, and equitable and accessible spaces for all to enjoy.”
