Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
ERG values diversity and continually strives to provide a work environment where every employee feels welcomed and supported as their authentic self. Our corporate DEI policy, “to continuously advance diversity, equity, and inclusion in who we are and what we do at ERG,” is supported throughout the company and implemented by our DEI committee. The committee develops and implements recommendations in three areas:
- Recruiting, hiring, and retention strategies to increase the number of employees from historically underrepresented populations.
- Internal training, tools, and resources to promote awareness about the full range of diversity at ERG and best practices to help make our workplace as inclusive as possible.
- DEI-aware work practices to ensure that our products and services are as meaningful as possible to the full diversity of our clients, partners, and audiences.
Our DEI committee is open to all employees. We encourage job applicants to ask us more about the committee’s work and new employees to join the committee if they would like to do so. We thank our committee for helping us continually improve DEI at ERG.
Small Business and Supplier Diversity Program
ERG is dedicated to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in every aspect of our business. Our suppliers are no exception. We recognize that our small business partners are an integral source of experience, innovation, and expertise, and we value and respect the significant economic and social benefits that emerge from utilizing and collaborating with a diverse team of small business subcontractors.
ERG’s dedicated Small Business Liaison Officer advocates for small businesses by conducting outreach, promoting company program initiatives, investigating subcontracting opportunities, networking with small businesses, and fulfilling compliance requirements. We are committed to providing maximum practicable procurement opportunities to small, small disadvantaged, woman-owned, historically underutilized business zone, veteran-owned, and service-disabled veteran-owned small businesses. In addition, we identify and team with state-certified minority-owned and woman-owned businesses, AbilityOne Companies, and Historically Black Colleges and Universities/Minority Institutes whenever possible.
In 2019, ERG proudly accepted the Administrator’s Award for Outstanding Accomplishments by a Large Prime Contractor from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. This award recognized our small business program accomplishments, including small business utilization and outreach activities. ERG’s unwavering resolve to advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion, both within and beyond our organization, is firmly grounded in our policies, allocation of resources, executive leadership, and commitment to our small business and supplier diversity program. Visit Team with Us to contact ERG's Small Business Liaison Officer for more information.
Greening ERG
Climate Goals and Reporting
We are committed to doing our part to help mitigate the impacts of climate change and reduce our carbon footprint. Our climate goals include:
- Annually conducting a greenhouse gas inventory that accounts for our scope 1, scope 2, and scope 3 (business travel) emissions. See our inventory at The Climate Registry.
- Using 100 percent renewable electricity to power our corporate offices and laboratories.
- Balancing any remaining emissions associated with our business operations with high-quality carbon offsets.
ERG is a member of The Climate Registry and has achieved Climate Registered™ Gold level for its increasing ambition in the areas of GHG reporting and reductions.
Renewable Electricity
Since 2003, ERG has purchased renewable energy certificates (RECs) to match 100 percent of our electricity use. For 2023, ERG purchased 2.2 million kilowatt-hours of RECs from ACT Commodities, equivalent to the annual power needs of more than 200 average American homes. The RECs are certified by Green-e and sourced from the Neosho Ridge Wind Energy Center in Kansas.
ERG is a longstanding Partner in the U.S. EPA’s Green Power Partnership, a voluntary leadership program of organizations committed to using green power. Our Partner Profile details our involvement in the program and history of green power use.
Carbon Offsets
ERG purchases high-quality carbon offsets to cover all scope 1 and scope 2 emissions, as well as scope 3 business travel emissions. We partnered with ACT Commodities to balance our 2023 emissions. The offsets are sourced from Montes del Este Afforestation project in Uruguay. This project serves to reforest over 4,000 hectares of degraded grasslands. By converting this previously cattle-grazed stretch of land into forest, the newly planted trees will serve as carbon sinks and sequester large amounts of carbon dioxide, resulting in net anthropogenic carbon removals. The project is certified under the Verified Carbon Standard.
Green Buildings
Our Arlington, Virginia, office is located in a green building, certified by the U.S. Green Building Council through its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program at the “silver” level. When constructing or renovating any of our offices, ERG consistently opts for environmentally friendly and sustainable product options. In a recent renovation, our Chantilly, Virginia, office followed the criteria for many of the LEED credits to green the space.

Accreditations
Quality Management – ISO 9001:2015
ERG achieved ISO 9001 Quality Management System certification from NSF International Strategic Registrations. ERG’s quality management system certification applies to the management of professional, engineering, and IT services that ERG provides under U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) contracts that require contract-specific quality management plans.
The International Organization for Standardization’s ISO 9001 standard is based on quality management principles such as a strong customer focus, the involvement of top management, and continual improvement. The standard helps organizations reliably meet the needs of clients in both the delivery and continuous improvement of products and services. The standard focuses on performance through a combination of risk-based thinking and a process approach, as well as employment of the “plan-do-check-act” cycle at all levels in the organization.
IT Service Management – ISO/IEC 20000-1:2018
ERG achieved ISO/IEC 20000-1 Service Management System certification from NSF International Strategic Registrations. ERG’s service management system applies to the management of website and IT application help desk services for contracted customers.
The International Organization for Standardization’s ISO/IEC 20000-1 standard helps identify and respond to customer needs through planning, delivery, and improvement of customer services. Implementation of a service management system demonstrates ERG’s commitment to excellence and best practices in service.
Information Security Management – ISO/IEC 27001: 2013
ERG achieved ISO/IEC 27001 Information Security Management System certification from NSF International Strategic Registrations. This certification covers the information security management system ERG established to manage the secure cloud-based environment we use to host corporate and customer-based applications. This environment provides isolated development and staging areas that support software development and testing activities.
The International Organization for Standardization’s ISO/IEC 27001 standard describes the requirements for establishing, implementing, operating, monitoring, reviewing, maintaining, and improving a documented information security management system. The standard focuses on the management and protection of information assets through risk-based thinking, monitoring and measuring controls, and continual improvement.
Capability Maturity Model Integration for Development (CMMI-DEV)
ERG’s Digital and Information Solutions Group was appraised at CMMI-DEV maturity level 3 by JFR Consulting.
Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) is a process and behavioral model that helps organizations streamline process improvement and encourage productive, efficient behaviors that decrease risks in software and service development. CMMI is the result of more than 20 years of ongoing work at Carnegie Mellon University by members of industry, government, and ISACA.
An appraisal at maturity level 3 indicates the organization is performing at a “defined” level. At this level, ERG’s Digital and Information Solutions Group ensures that:
- We use organizational standards and tailoring to address project and work characteristics.
- We focus on achieving both project and organizational performance objectives.
- We’re dedicated to continuous performance improvement and producing the highest quality of products and services.
- Our projects use and contribute to organizational assets.
- Our projects have processes that are planned and executed in accordance with policy.
