ERG Supports EPA and DOJ Settlement with Carbon Black Manufacturers

justice scales

With ERG support, EPA and the U.S. Department of Justice recently reached settlements with three carbon black manufacturers over their alleged Clean Air Act violations at plants in four states. ERG supported EPA’s investigations of these plants since 2008. According to EPA, production of carbon black—which is used in diverse products such as tires and cosmetics—releases harmful air pollutants and particulate matter that can cause severe respiratory and cardiovascular impacts and premature death. ERG inspected seven of the nine plants covered by the settlements and estimated emission reductions resulting from required pollution control equipment and monitoring tools at those plants. The settlements will help protect public health by advancing the latest technological approaches to reducing air pollutant emissions and particulate matter.
