ERG Supports Major EPA Report on Fracking Impacts on Drinking Water

Over a 5-year period, ERG surveyed oil and gas companies engaged in fracking activities, analyzed oil and gas well data, and reviewed more than 5,000 public comments in support of an EPA assessment of the potential impacts of fracking on U.S. drinking water resources. While EPA's draft assessment, Assessment of the Potential Impacts of Hydraulic Fracturing for Oil and Gas on Drinking Water Resources, did not find any widespread impacts, it did identify important vulnerabilities that could impact drinking water, including water withdrawals in areas with low water availability, inadequately treated wastewater discharges, below-ground gas and liquid migration, and fracking wastewater spills. EPA will use the information from this study in future regulatory and policy decisions regarding hydraulic fracturing. Check out EPA's news release for more information.
