Joanna Kind, a senior environmental scientist at ERG, was recently recognized at the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) 2023 Annual International Meeting for her leadership in revising an existing industry standard, resulting in the newly published Weather-Based Landscape Irrigation Control Systems. This standard describes test methods to determine the performance of weather-based irrigation controllers, a cutting-edge technology that schedules landscape irrigation based on local weather and site conditions. The standard was quickly adopted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) WaterSense program, which promotes smart and efficient irrigation.

As committee chair, Joanna led a team of experts to quickly address and correct errors that had been identified in equations within the existing standard. She then took the opportunity to carry out a more significant revision of the standard to ensure consistency in testing when applied in the field. At ERG, Joanna supports a variety of projects for EPA’s Office of Water and leads ERG’s New Mexico office in Santa Fe. Learn more about ERG’s Water Quality and Infrastructure services.
