Evaluation of Pentagon Resilience

Project Brief
The Challenge
The U.S. Pentagon needed support to evaluate their facilities’ ability to withstand, adapt to, and recover from disruptions such as natural hazards and disasters, cyber threats, infrastructure failures, and other emergencies. Resilience assessments help organizations ensure operational continuity, minimize downtime, and protect people, assets, and critical functions. The Department of Defense’s Washington Headquarters Services selected ERG as the technical lead to support assessments of the resilience, to all likely hazards, of the Pentagon and WHS’s Mark Center building.
ERG's Solution
For both sites, ERG assessed the risks to mission, workforce, physical assets, utilities, infrastructure, and natural areas. We identified the highest consequence issues and assets and provided project recommendations to increase overall resilience, including actions designed for specific assets and functions. ERG also supported the project by identifying efforts by other jurisdictions and sectors (including the city, transportation, utilities, and emergency service sectors) in the national capital region to increase the resilience of the infrastructure and utilities that the Pentagon and Mark Center operations rely on. In addition, ERG provided input on Department of Defense resilience and sustainability directives, supported the Pentagon Preparedness Fair and other events, and evaluated and responded to executive orders.
