ERG-Supported Investigation Leads to Cleaner Air for Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky
With ERG support, EPA and DOJ recently reached a settlement with the Marathon Petroleum Corporation that will reduce harmful air emissions in three Midwest states. The settlement resolves violations in gasoline production at some of the companies’ refineries that may have caused excessive air emissions from motor vehicles. It also requires Marathon to install next-generation technology to detect potential leaks from 14 fuel storage tanks in Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio. ERG supported the investigation and compliance evaluation, which determined that Marathon violated Clean Air Act standards for volatile organic compounds, sulfur levels, and ethanol levels.
