ERG to Support Emerging Contaminants and Toxics Source Minimization Work in Washington State

The Washington Department of Ecology recently selected ERG to conduct a literature review and study on contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) and toxic chemicals in wastewater. The review will include effective source tracing procedures, monitoring guidelines for CECs in industrial wastewater, and treatment options for priority contaminants. It will also evaluate the unique challenges that may occur in the Puget Sound region and greater Washington State.  

The effort—which will synthesize guidance from federal, state, local, and international programs—will help inform ongoing work to reduce toxic chemicals at the source and protect water quality statewide. 

“We are very excited to be supporting the Department of Ecology with this cutting-edge work,” said Christy Williams, Project Manager. "Our efforts will support permit writers as well as permitted wastewater treatment plants and municipalities better understand the prevalence and sources of emerging contaminants in Washington State. This will inform source reduction and treatment strategies and hopefully lead to reduced water quality impacts.”
