Supporting EPA’s Proposed Regulations to Reduce Power Plant Water Pollution
For the last 15 years, ERG has supported the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) efforts to revise regulations impacting water pollution from coal-fired power plants. These power plants generate wastewater in the form of chemical pollutants, which impact nearby environments and waterbodies. In 2023, ERG is proud to assist EPA in its most recent proposal for stronger limits on three types of wastewater generated at coal-fired power plants: flue gas desulfurization wastewater, bottom ash transport water, and combustion residual leachate. ERG’s support also included identifying applicable treatment technologies for achieving the proposed requirements and conducting a new analysis of potential impacts from leachate that may discharge water pollution to water bodies through groundwater.
