Project Brief

The Challenge

Called to action by the continued decline of ocean health, the environmental funder community has responded with a growing focus on protecting coastal and marine habitats and resources. Funders need knowledge and tools to rapidly and strategically address emerging and long-term threats to ocean ecosystems and coastal communities and economies. The David and Lucile Packard Foundation—a leader in the ocean conservation funding sector—turned to Blue Earth Consultants to identify successes and lessons learned and guide their strategic visioning process for funding ocean protection.

ERG's Solution

Blue Earth Consultants synthesized portfolio-scale lessons learned from 20 government and private foundation grant-making programs for ocean conservation throughout the world. Our research informed the Packard Foundation’s internal ocean visioning process and created a resource for the wider ocean funder community. We also produced a synthesis document on the past decade of ocean conservation, Ocean Conservation Strategic Funding Initiatives: A Study of Successes and Lessons Learned, describing impacts and lessons learned.
